DD2.JZ Project Car– The Best of Two Worlds

A rather unusual engine swap

Dotz has taken a huge step closer to achieving its project goal. Since June this year, the Dotz body shop has been successfully revolving around one thing – the engine swap of the 2JZ GTE Toyota engine into the Bavarian hull. The time has come and the team around Christian Haderer, the DD2.JZ Beast's mastermind, has managed to successfully complete one of the major phases.

At the 2017 IAA many rumours were confirmed. BMW is definitely launching a new version of the Z4. Toyota, on the other hand, has kept a lid on things. The disguised prototype of the new Supra version has hardly been sighted up until now, which makes things even more interesting, and Dotz is far from shunning the comparison.

In the first phase, Dotz installed a 2JZ GTE Toyota engine into the venerable hull of the Z4 convertible. The 3-l twin turbo engine has been way ahead of its time, even in the year dot due to the powertrain’s enormous potential.

The powertrain & heart

The front cut came end of June, and Christian Haderer experienced a sheer firework of happiness hormones. As an aficionado and owner of two Toyota Supras, the 2JZ GTE engine is the next logical step to make this project car come true. The BMW engine must make way for the Japanese powertrain, however, before that can happen the appearance of the 2JZ aggregate must get a facelift. Since the 2JZ GTE engine will get a whole lotta more power, which requires a new fuel system, a premium drift car must, of course, also have a perfectly adjusted hydraulic handbrake.

A wedding on trial

Since early September, the newly constructed 2JZ GTE has been aligned with the BMW Z4 body. In addition to a new, customised engine and transmission suspension, the installation of a new exhaust system and grille, a custom-made downpipe and many hours of tinkering over a number of smaller challenges had to be carried out. After successfully combining the new engine and the venerable hull, the mecca of international car tuning – the Sema Show in Las Vegas – was calling.
